Floella Benjamin thrills children with her storytelling

Date: Tuesday 26th May 2009
Location: Waterstone’s, Lakeside

Are you sitting comfortably? Young parents and dads missing out on valuable story reading time with their children

According to a new survey out today to mark National Family Week, children are not being read a bedtime story every evening with a third watching TV before sleeping. Only 43% of the adults read to their child everyday and younger parents are failing to recognise the importance of reading to their children. One in ten 16-24 year-old parents have never read a story book to their children with 10% lacking the confidence to read aloud and only half believing it’s fun for parent and child.

A survey, carried out by Capital Shopping Centres - supporter of National Family Week and the UK’s leading shopping centre business, found younger parents are three times more likely to feel guilty about missing out on this experience than older parents, but many argue that they simply don’t have the time and instead rely on nursery or childcare to do the job.

According to the survey, favourite classic books cited by parents are:
1. Roald Dahl
2. The Very Hungry Caterpillar
3. The Famous Five
4. The Gruffalo
5. Peter Pan
6. Harry Potter
7. Alice in Wonderland
8. Beauty and the Beast
9. The Railway Children
10. Charlie and Lola

Butterflies in My Stomach and Other School Hazards

by Serge Bloch 9781402741586 £8.99 Sterling

Award-winning artist Serge Bloch will have kids laughing their heads off at this child’s-eye look at idiomatic expressions like “ants in your pants,” “homework is for the birds,” and “cat got your tongue?” These commonly used sayings make sense in the adult world, but just imagine what a child pictures when she hears it’s “raining cats and dogs!” With witty and wonderful images that mix whimsical line drawings with photographs of inanimate objects, Bloch gives us a unique and sympathetic perspective on a boy’s first day of school where colourful butterflies flutter in our hero’s stomach and a cloud rains on him when he’s “under the weather.” Even the “big cheese” Principal has a body cut out of a block of Swiss.

CBeebies Live

CBeebies Live - Joey & Kieran

We arrived at Wembley Arena at 10.30am and quickly joined the queue to buy a Tweenies Milo glow stick - A must have when you go to a performance like this. After getting rid of the pushchair we were kindly showed to our seats and excitedly waited for the show to start.

Stephanie, Andy & Justin got the kids going with the opening and were then joined by The Koala Brothers to help start "The Treasure Hunt".

With quest appearances along the way from Jakers, Postman Pat, Underground Ernie, Pingu, Boo, Squiglet, Mr Tumbles, The TellyTubbies and best of all were Joey's favourite - The Tweenies. They really put a big smile on his and lots of other kids faces.

They finished the show with "Reach for the Stars" and had all the kids, Mums & Dads up dancing (me included).

All in all - A great start to Christmas and a really good day out for all the family!
