Take a Dip with Sharron Davies & Discover Pots of Cost Cutting Recipe Ideas

Pizza Picante, Tuna Rice Salad,
Baked Salsa Fish

Take a dip with former Olympic swimming champ & mother-of-three Sharron Davies and discover how to create some delicious cost cutting family recipes with any leftover pots of fresh dips.
“I love dips and always make sure I stock up on them when entertaining friends”, says Sharron, “but any leftovers are also great for whipping up tasty meals. From scrummy sandwich combinations of guacamole with peppers or speedy pasta suppers with tzatziki, they’re a great ingredient for lots of dishes.”

Try Sharron’s “three ways with salsa” and see just how far a 200g pot will stretch:

Mini pizzas are ideal for the kids’ tea. They’re great for using up the leftovers and easy enough for the kids to get involved. Spread the base with about a third of the pot – it’s a great time saver and also contributes towards their five-a-day as salsa is packed with tomatoes and onion.

Baked Salsa Fish is an effortless yet sophisticated dinner alternative for the adults. Top two pieces of white fish with a couple tablespoons each of the spicy salsa and a sprinkling of breadcrumbs, bake in the over for about 20 minutes and serve with new potatoes and green veg. It’s simply delicious!

Whip up a healthy salad for lunch. Mix a couple tablespoons of salsa, red kidney beans, canned tuna, sliced pepper and cooked rice and top with a handful of salad leaves.

“Of all the delicious flavours out there, salsa is still my all-time favourite,” says Sharron. “It’s really low on calories and delicious in a whole range of recipes. It’s a fridge staple that I’m never without and if I don’t end up using the pot for dipping, I certainly don’t let it go to waste…”

Salsa is naturally high in flavour but low in fat and calories making it the ideal dip to satisfy the most weight conscious taste buds. It is made from tomatoes, onions and chillies so is a great provider of antioxidants such as lycopene (which give tomatoes their red colour) and quercetin, a flavonoid antioxidant. One tablespoon (15g) is just eight calories.

There’s no doubt that fresh dips are extremely versatile and with over 45 different flavours available you’ll never get bored. They also make a great low fat alternative to butter, margarine and mayonnaise. Swap a tablespoon of butter for tzatziki and you’ll save 91 calories, guacamole, 83 calories, sour cream and chive, 63 calories, or 45 calories with onion and garlic dip.

Morning has broken (your healthy diet)

“Cereal manufacturers need to wake up to the fact that people want to eat healthily and provide them with the means to do so by reducing sugar and salt levels and making labelling clearer. With over a billion pounds spent on cereals every year, it’s time they rose to the occasion. ”

For more information or a copy of Going Against the Grain, please contact Kate Turnbull 02077707582, or visit www.which.co.uk/cereals (link will be live from Wed 29 April)

- Which? research in 2006 (Cereal re-offenders) looked at 275 cereals and found that leading cereal manufacturers all too often make inappropriate use of ‘health claims’ on less healthy foods, heavily promote sugary cereals to children or fail to use clear, transparent front-of-pack labelling. We wanted to see how much progress has been made over the past three years. We found that there has been some improvement particularly in relation to reducing salt levels in the cereals. However, it can still be a struggle to find a healthy choice.

- In 2007, the total UK cereals market (ready to eat and hot cereals) added up to £1.37bn (Mintel: Breakfast Cereals, UK, February 2008)

Easy as ABC - New baby pastas from the Annabel Karmel Make it Easy range

It is important to introduce texture into a baby’s diet from around seven months, but this is something that many parents find challenging. With this in mind Annabel Karmel MBE, the UK’s leading author on baby and children’s food and nutrition has launched a new range of 100% natural organic baby pastas.

“Mixing tiny pasta shapes into your baby’s favourite purees is the perfect way to introduce texture. Encouraging your baby to chew also helps develop the muscles your baby needs for speech. By giving fresh food in the first years also makes the transition to family food mush easier and can help to prevent your child from becoming a fussy eater”

To inspire your culinary creativity the pastas have delicious recipe ideas on pack – with many more to be found at www.annabelkarmel.com and in Annabel’s best selling book, The Complete Baby & Toddler Meal Planner.

Ten Family Friendly Restaurants

BIG EASY –THE ALL AMERICAN DREAM

Founded over 15 years ago, the Big Easy Barbecue and Crabshack, on Chelsea’s fashionable Kings Road, continues to fly the Star Spangled flag, welcoming new Executive Chef Isaac Holzwarth to the team. With over 10 years experience stateside in Chicago supper clubs and steakhouses including Ralph Lauren’s first restaurant and the Gibsons Restaurant Group, Isaac is sure to stamp his red white and blue trademark in the kitchen – meaning business as usual with signature steaks, fresh Maine lobster, North Atlantic Crab, home smoked BBQ ribs and Kobe burgers.

Like an old pair of your favourite jeans, there’s a laidback familiarity once you step through the doors of the capital’s best loved American restaurant. Set over two floors, Big Easy is all about home-style cooking, family, friends and live music. The wooden décor throughout the restaurant, American signs on the walls that read ‘Gone Fishin’ and the lobster nets hung from the ceiling provide a relaxed venue and a refreshing alternative to the ubiquitous minimalism of today’s über fashionable restaurants.
