100 Books Every Child Should Read
‘If children are to become readers for life, they must first love stories’
We are in a muddle about literacy. We worry endlessly that children in Britain are not becoming readers. Report after report reveals that we are slipping further and further behind in child literacy levels when compared with other countries. Interesting that Finland finds itself at the top of a recent child happiness table as well as child literacy levels. More of Finland and happiness later.
I'm thinking that education itself is in part to blame. Ironically, it may be responsible both for the great blossoming of our literature, and at the same time for leaving so many with the impression that literature is not for them, but the preserve of a certain educated elite. As a consequence, much of our society has become separated from its own stories. This alienation can happen all too easily.

Half Of All UK Parents
Dread The May Bank Helliday Getaway

New research out today reveals that far from looking forward to the break this May, UK parents are considering it a Bank Helliday, with almost one in two (45%*) worrying about how to keep the children entertained and occupied over the long weekend – especially when it comes to long car journeys.
The research, commissioned by learndirect, the UK’s largest provider
of numeracy and literacy skills and qualifications, surveyed parents
with children aged up to 2, and found that braving the country’s
roads and motorways with the children causes the most stress for more
than one in ten parents (13%). Findings further reveal that one in two (49%**) kids get bored in just 15 minutes
if they have nothing to do. And with the RAC warning of unprecedented
bank holidaycongestion, cars and kids are a recipe for raised blood
pressure amongst parents, warns learndirect.
When it comes to long car journeys, traditional car games are still
the best way to keep the kids occupied, with almost 70% of parents
opting for the likes of ‘I Spy’ or ‘counting cows’.
A similar number of parents (66%) also bring books to keep their kids
busy on long journeys. However, three in five (60%) are forking out
for the latest games consols and portable DVD players to keep their
cherubs busy.

Cherry Cake and Ginger Beer by Jane
Brocket - perfect cookery book for adults and children
inspired by children's classics including THE FAMOUS FIVE and SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS

Jane Brocket's CHERRY CAKE AND GINGER BEER marries good old fashioned cooking with children's fiction - it is inspired by all the children's classics including The Famous Five, Swallows and Amazons, Pippi Longstocking and What Katy Did. We publish 10th July 2008.
There is a lot you can get out of this book - not only are there scrumptious recipes, but each chapter has an evocative description about the book that inspired it.
Jane got her inspiration from her youngest daughter Phoebe. Whilst Phoebe was reading Enid Blyton one holiday, they began discussing the various cakes, breakfasts and feasts in The Famous Five and decided to begin trying out the recipes from Children's classics.
This is a book to inspire a whole new generation and transport us back to our childhoods - appealing to foodies, book worms, adults and children alike!

Knight Time - 0-5 Years
(B & G)
Review

Every night, when their daddies tuck them in,
Little Knight dreams of fierce knight-eating dragons
and Little Dragon dreams of dangerous dragon-slaying knights.
But one dark, stormy night, their two worlds collide and Little Dragon and Little Knight discover that they both have teddy bears and cuddly blankets – and they’re not scary at all!
Simple language and powerful imagery shows up the nature of mistaken prejudices and uncovers the universality of night-time fears by using characters who are naturally scared of each other. The result is a reassuring bed-time book with a difference.

Is Switching To A Mediterranena Diet
Rather Than a Low Diet Better For Those At Risk Of Heart Disease?

Is switching to a Mediterranean diet rather than a low-fat diet
better for those at risk of heart disease?
Help A Heart Week (June 4-12)
However, in a new book Smart Health Choices, the authors argue that a recent randomised trial comparing a low-fat diet with a Mediterranean one, highlighted some doubts.
Smart Health Choices provides the reader with the tools for assessing health advice, whether it comes from a specialist, general practitioner, naturopath, the media, the Internet, or a friend. It shows individuals how to take an active role in their healthcare, and how to make the best decisions for themselves and their loved ones based on their personal preferences and the best available evidence.
* Today 2.6 million people in the UK are affected by coronary heart disease. The British Heart Foundation is totally committed to preventing heart disease devastating people’s lives. It invests nearly £100 every minute of every day on lifesaving research to fight heart disease. The Help a Heart campaign is aiming to raise £1.5 million this June to continue to save more lives, and help keep more families together. For more information about supporting the Help a Heart campaign visit www.bhf.org.uk
